EDUCATIONAL AWARDS

Frederick C. Graham Educational Awards

Dr. F. C. GrahamDescription. Dr. Frederick C. Graham Educational Awards are monetary awards to help defray enrollment and tuition costs for programs of study with a focus on language and intercultural communication. Preference is given to proposals for intensive courses of foreign language study such as summer programs.

Eligibility. In order to be considered, applicants should be enrolled in, or accepted into, accredited colleges and universities in either the undergraduate or graduate level. In some cases, well-qualified and mature high school students will be considered. There are no residency requirements. Family members of Benedict Foundation board members, employees and substantial donors specifically are excluded for consideration for awards.

Amount. Awards generally will be in the $250 - $1000 range, depending on the proposed program of study and its cost, and the availability of funds. Only in exceptional and highly-qualified cases would the full amount for a proposed program of study be awarded.

How to Apply. Application is to be in the form of a letter proposal stating clearly (a) who the applicant is; what the applicant proposes to study; where; and the anticipated total cost; and (b) why the applicant wishes to undertake this course of study; and how the applicant plans to put to use the acquired knowledge and skills. (c) Additionally, the applicant must specify a mentor or supervisor (this could be a Program Director) who will vouch for the student and be willing to submit notification upon enrollment, and a brief progress report half-way through the proposed language study and again upon completion. Supervision of awards, once made, will be conducted primarily through the designated mentor or supervisor. (d) In addition to a brief letter of agreement from the designated mentor or supervisor, the applicant should include as well two brief letters of recommendation written on each recommender’s letterhead. We also may ask for additional information if a proposal is accepted for consideration.
